What Is Plump Skin & Why Do You Want It?

The term plump skin is one that is frequently used on skincare products, especially moisturizers, hydrating serums, and face oils. But, many people don’t actually know what exactly plump skin is, if they have it, or why they would even want it in the first place.

To help you better understand the importance of plumpness in youthful-looking skin, we’ve put together this plumping guide. Keep reading to learn what it means, why it matters, and the products that will give a more plumped appearance.

What Is Plump Skin?

If you look at the face of a baby or small child, you’ll notice they have a natural roundness. This plumpness is a signifier of young, healthy looking skin. As we age, our skin begins to lose collagen and elastin, two essential proteins that are responsible for keeping the structure of your skin strong and intact. That production begins to slow down in your 20s and existing collagen and elastin degrade. This leads to sagging and hollowness to fine lines and wrinkles. You’ll also find that skin will be drier, which can contribute to a less plump look and can make those age-related issues more visible.

Why Do I Want It?

When you lose that natural plumpness, your skin will begin to look more aged. It will appear more tired, light won’t reflect off of skin as easily so you’ll see more shadows and hollows, fine lines and wrinkles will be more visible, and there will be less elasticity and bounce to your skin. How Do I Get It Back?

Losing your skin’s plump appearance is a natural result of aging, and so not something that can be completely avoided. However, there are products that can help keep skin looking youthful longer.

There are many ingredients that are responsible for making skin appear plumper, but perhaps the most important one of which is Hyaluronic Acid. It’s a humectant ingredient, meaning it can help preserve or maintain moisture — in fact, one molecule of Hyaluronic Acid can hold 1000x its weight in water.

Hyaluronic Acid works by helping the skin retain moisture, which immediately causes skin to visibly plump. This makes things like fine lines, wrinkles, and rough texture look less severe and contributes to an overall younger appearance to the skin.

Which Kiehl’s Products Are Good For Plumping?

We incorporate ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid (and its derivatives, Sodium Hyaluronate and Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid) and Glycerin (another powerful humectant) in a variety of our moisturizing and anti-aging products.

The Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate is made with 15 percent Glycerin and Shiso Leaf Extract which plumps skin and smooths the appearance of fine lines and texture. It also significantly decreases the look of dull, tired-looking skin that can be caused by age-related dehydration

In our Super Multi-Corrective Cream, an anti-aging multi-tasking moisturizer, we use Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid — a form of Hyaluronic Acid that is in tiny pieces that are more easily able to penetrate the surface layers of skin. The formula with Beech Tree Extract and Jasmonic Acid helps visibly lift, firm, and re-texturize skin.

The Super Multi-Corrective Eye-Opening Serum is a lightweight eye treatment product that is made with 10 percent botanical extracts and Sodium Hyaluronate, the sodium salt of Hyaluronic Acid, which is known to be a moisturizing agent that helps hydrate, replenish, and refine skin texture. When used regularly, this anti-aging eye serum visibly lifts, firms, and restores a youthful-looking shape to the eyes.

With these hydrating ingredients you can help restore your skin’s plump, and youthful appearance for a smoother, firmer, more hydrated-looking complexion.
